Calls to Decolonise Australia’s Mental Health Care

Australia’s mental health system must decolonise to better serve Indigenous communities, argues a recent commentary. Current approaches often fail to address the unique cultural and historical experiences of Indigenous Australians. Advocates emphasise the need to empower more Indigenous psychologists, ensuring culturally appropriate care and acknowledging the impact of intergenerational trauma. Decolonising the mental health framework would lead to more inclusive, respectful, and effective support, fostering better outcomes for Indigenous individuals and communities.
