New program opens the door for language to be spoken where it belongs.

TENTERFIELD, NSW — A new community-led initiative is set to support the return of the Ngarabal language to everyday life in the Tenterfield region.

Backed by state funding and developed in partnership with local organisations, the program will offer language learning opportunities for community members interested in reconnecting with culture. The initiative will take place throughout the year and will be delivered on Country by local facilitators.

This marks an important step in ongoing efforts to preserve and revitalise Aboriginal languages across New South Wales. For the Ngarabal people, it represents a deeply personal and long overdue moment of reconnection, strengthening identity, restoring cultural ties, and ensuring knowledge is passed on to future generations.

“Language is who we are. It shapes how we see the world, how we care for Country, and how we relate to each other,” said a spokesperson from the Severn River, Ngarabal and Kwiambal Aboriginal Corporation (SRNKAC), the organisation leading the initiative. “We are proud to be creating space for that connection to grow here in Tenterfield.”

Spaces in the program are limited, and preference will be given to Ngarabal families and other local community members. Those wishing to express interest are encouraged to visit the organisation’s website and use the Contact Us form to register.

Further details about the program schedule and format will be shared in the coming weeks.
