On-Country gathering brings culture, connection and community together

SRNKAC recently hosted an on-Country cultural gathering in the Tenterfield region, bringing together community members from across New South Wales and beyond.

Over several days, mob travelled from across the region, with some making the journey from as far as Victoria, to come together on Country. The gathering provided a space for connection, cultural practice, and shared experience, grounded in community and led by those who hold cultural authority.

Elders played a central role throughout, guiding activities and sharing knowledge and stories in a way that reflects how these practices are properly held and passed on. Participants spent time on Country, visiting culturally important locations in the region and engaging in both men’s and women’s business in a respectful and appropriate way.

Alongside this, the gathering created opportunities for participants to learn and build on art and crafting skills, as well as to spend time together more informally, strengthening relationships and reinforcing connections within the community.

Importantly, the gathering was driven by the commitment of those who attended, with participants travelling and contributing in their own way to make the event possible. This level of engagement highlights the value placed on opportunities to reconnect with culture and Country in a way that is community-led.

Since the gathering, SRNKAC has received further enquiries from individuals seeking to participate in future events. This ongoing interest reflects a clear demand for culturally grounded activities that support connection, learning, and continuity.

SRNKAC will continue to build on this work, creating opportunities for community members to come together on Country in ways that are respectful, inclusive, and led by culture.
